Thoughts on Purpose

Last night I had a photography session with one of my beautiful friends, Mia.

The outcome of this session is so much more fabulous than I could have ever imagined.

I am stunned by them.

That said, they are also a reminder of my overwhelming imposter syndrome, something I know many of you can relate to.

Through the entire session, I was convinced I was not sticking the landing with the shoot. I was certain that I would have to offer to reshoot the session with her.

Then I got home and uploaded the photos to my computer. Not only were they good enough to deliver, but they are also some of my favorite portraits.

I am sad to admit that this is something I experience with every session. As I progress as a photographer and learn more about art, this anxiety has actually become worse.

Where is the wisdom here? I think it is to growing creatives, especially photographers, who may be reading this.

If you are feeling insecure about your skills, know that you are not alone. You are probably also not nearly as bad as you think you are.

Further, the only way to get better at your craft is to keep creating. So, in the face of harsh self-critique, push through. Do not let anyone-- especially your own insecurities-- stop you from creating the art that only you can create.

Our art has a purpose.

Let this session with Mia be a sign of that.

Happy creating, friends.
